生物を取り巻く環境は常に変化しています。われわれの身に当てはめれば思いつきますが、寒かったり、暑かったり、お腹が空いたりと、生まれてから死ぬまでつきまといます。 こうした変化に対して生き物は体の中でどのように応答しているのだろうか?というのが、長年の研究テーマでした。これとは別に、環境問題、特に化学物質に よるヒトや環境への影響に対しても関心あるテーマでした。こうした生体という「ミクロな世界」と環境という「マクロな世界」のテーマを何とかつなぐことは できないかと、長らく思っていましたが、幸運なことに、ここ安全科学研究部門で実現することができました。

現在、製造ナノ材料の安全性評価研究を行っています。特に、DNAマイクロアレイという手法を使い、ヒトの培養細胞やラットの組織の遺伝子発現 を網羅的に解析することで、今までの化学物質とは一味違う(?)ナノ材料の生体影響評価を行っています。われわれの強みは、産業技術「総合」研究所にいる ことです。ここには、私のような生物屋はもとより、物理・化学屋さん、材料屋さん、計測屋さん、そしてリスク評価のエキスパートがたくさんいます。異なる 領域の方と融合して仕事できる研究機関は、世界でもそうあるわけではありません。これだけ良い条件だったら、よい成果を早く世に出せ、との声が聞こえてき ます。その通りです。お応えすべく、日々挑戦です
