— Evaluating risks associated with manufactured nanomaterials —

Research and Development of Nanoparticle Characterization Methods (P06041), a research project under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), was carried out from June 2006 to February 2011. This web site is no longer updated with the termination of the project.

The Second International Symposium on the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials was held on September 29-30, 2011. The objectives were to disseminate the results of the project and to provide an opportunity to discuss the implications of the project. The lecture overview and the lecture videos are available on NEDO website.

NEDO organized a subcommittee meeting on the project (post-project evaluation) on December 1, 2011. The meeting materials (in Japanese) including agenda, minutes and presentation slides are available on NEDO website. NEDO will conduct follow-up survey and evaluation of the project for 5 years after the project completion.

Outline

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) started 5-year project from fiscal year 2006 entitled "Research and Development of Nanoparticle Characterization Methods". This project was launched on the basis of the following two projects: a study carried out at the AIST, which began in fiscal year 2005, "Risk assessment and risk management for new technologies -Case study on nanotechnologies-", and a NEDO project conducted by the University of Occupational and Environmental Health and Hiroshima University, "Surveillance study of preliminary test of the effect of exposure of nanoparticles to living bodies caused by inhalation." About 50 researchers from six research units of AIST and six universities including the University of Occupational and Environmental Health participated in this project.
The goals of this project were: 1) to establish preparation methods of test samples, to develop methods for measuring the shape and size of nanomaterials (NMs) tested, toxicity testing, exposure analysis and to publish the results obtained in the form of manuals; 2) to carry out the risk assessment of typical NMs, propose a risk management policy on the basis of the risk assessments and formulate the risk assessment documents. Major differences between this project and other projects are that the main objective is not the toxicity evaluation but the risk evaluation, and the characterization of the shape and size of NMs to be tested is an important factor in this project.

Research and Development of Nanoparticle Characterization Methods (P06041), a research project under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), was launched in June 2006 to drive research into risk assessment of manufactured nanomaterials in Japan, and was completed on February 28, 2011. As a result, the English translations of the following documents were developed and disclosed.
  1.
